Re: [F_minor] The re-recording....

Hey! That wasn't easy! I had to find the old quote in the archives of some screwy list called F_Minor, at

https://email.rutgers.edu/pipermail/f_minor/2005-April/003611.html

which has my old article about finding the Welte LPs at a tag sale, and the amazing story of the Welte Player Piano. The inventor was Edwin Welte, and the beautiful Book-of-the-Month-Club LPs were recorded from rescued Welte rolls ...

The Welte Vorsetzer poised at the keyboard of Steinway Concert Grand No.
61, Los Angeles, winter 1962-63. Notice the absence of a human.

Here's the GG quote. He describes listening to the Welte rolls as

"... both enormously rewarding and deeply disturbing ... because many of
these performances are hard to reconcile with the architectural notions
which our own generation prize most highly ... one is made deeply aware of
the transitory nature of interpretative ideals, and one is even led to ask
fundamental questions about the nature of stylistic concept as viewed by
the performer."
