GG Beethoven



In response to Fred's request for a good GG Beethoven recording:

Try and find the CBC live recording of the Beethoven first and second piano
concertos, done when he was 18 or 19 at Massey Hall in Toronto. The CD is
very impressive, especially for someone of such a young age.

Also, look for a recording of the Emperor concerto and the Tempest.

I don't see how anyone could possibly be disappointed by any of those
recordings. They offer a fresh interpretation of pieces that are far too
often played the same damn way.

As far as the Liszt piano transcriptions of Beethoven's 5th and 6th, you'd
be hard pressed to find a better recording than the GG one. The monotony of
the repetitious themes is not the fault of GG, but, rather of Beethoven.
Just something to think about...
