GG: Miscellany related and unrelated

Hi, everyone! We Gouldians (Gouldites) have been strangely silent for some
time now. Is it the post-holiday blues? Have they already passed and given
way to the midwinter blues? Are we all under a non-Gouldian spell?

As for me -- I confess to having listened to GG recordings on only two
occasions in the past 2-3 month! -- the '59 Salzburg Goldbergs, and a
fascinating Music and Arts CD which I recently picked up (with superb liner
notes by Kevin Bazzana) called "GG plays Romantic Repertory." It's all stuff
recorded from CBC broadcasts: the Chopin Sonata no. 3, Scriabin Sonata No.
5, and Beethoven Variations in c minor (WoO # 35). The Chopin is
particularly interesting: GG plays it with a constant pulse; he uses very
little rubato, and refuses to change tempo at the obvious places for
"effect." So, the perf is certainly not Romantic or idiomatic -- but for all
that, it is still beautiful in spots, and (as KB points out), the approach
works well in the propulsive 3rd mvt.

Other than that -- I went on a Handel jag (oratorios), and now I'm on an
Elgar jag (symphonies and "The Dream of Gerontius")....great music, none of
which was previously familiar to me.

Regards --

Daniel
