Yes, there's been many articles on this in ICRC, The International
Classical Record Collector - an indispensible quarterly magazine from
Gramophone Publications Ltd. in Britain.

Telephone: -44 181 422 4562

Fax: -44 181 869 8400

You can also reach them through the Gramophone via email:

Do not hesitate. This magazine has been on the stands just a few years, and
they carry highly interesting and revealing articles, going in depth in
many subjects having to do with recording, archiving, restoration and many
other things.

Some examples:

Autum Edition 1996:

* An article on the National Sound Archive (Britain)

* Reproducing 78's - the old fashioned way.

* Audio and the record collector - the preservation of archive recordings.

* Mark Obert-Thorn; the moderate interventionist - The renowned American
transfer engineer is interviewed.

* This issue also carries a review on a book called Repeated Takes - a
history on recording and it's effect on music. It covers the lot from
cylinders on!

Spring edition 1998 carries these articles, among others:

* An article on 78's and the recording of the harpsichord.

* Shellac passions; Sachio Moroishi has restored some of the distinguished
Léner Quartet recordings.

Summer edition 1996 carries:

* The history of sterephonic recording during the 1930, and 1940s.

* Audio and the record collector: machines and devices for cleaning LPs.

Autumn issue 1997:

* Two-channel pathfinder: Roy Wallace, one of Decca's stereo pioneers.

Winter edition 1996:

* The Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound.

* Accidental stereo - the story so far.

* New light on analouge to digital. Johann-Nikolaus Matthes and Alan
Sanders about remastering older recordings.

* On piano roll reproduction.

Summer Edition 1997:

* Back to the future: EMI transfer engineer Andrew Walter demystifies the
remastering process.

* The birth of the gramophone.

* Magnetic tape recording: John Borwick traces it's introduction.

Winter Edition 1997 has the subtitle: From Cylinder to CD. It carries:

* History without hiss: On the Sir Solti's Ring remastered with CEDAR.

* The art of the balance engineer

Winter Edition 1995 carries:

* Ward Marston; the compleat transfer engineer. Martson talks about his
techniques and philosophies.

* 70 years of electrical recording.

Spring Edition 1996:

* Hearing 78's at their best. A discussion on the use of modern technology
in obtaining the best sound from shellac recordings.

Autumn Edition 1995:

* A machine that reproduces cylinders electrically.

And it goes on and on and on. The magazine is also very sensitive to new
ideas, so tell them what interesting subject in this field you'd like to
read about, and they may put their efforts there!
