Well, I imagine that GG would have found having the Prize named after him rather embarrassing
and maybe inexplicable, but not totally unacceptable; because it isn't actually _competitive_.
People are nominated for the homour, and presumably a committee discusses and selects the
winner, but no candidate is required to compete or to demonstrate his ability in front of a
judge.
However, I do think that he would have opposed very strongly his name being associated with
"stories of brutal murderers". Speaking of which, I wonder why the lawyers who manage the Estate
of Glenn Gould gave their permission for GG's own recording of the Goldbergs being used for the
film "Hannibal" (the follow-up to "Silence of the Lambs") and to his name appearing in the
credits? (I assume the makers of the film had to have such permission.) I was under the
impression that GG's lawyer is very keen to protect GG's name and image from exploitation. The
first Silence of the Lambs film, if I remember correctly, did not actually use GG's name or even
his recordings. (He is mentioned in the book, but in a way that contrasts the sheer beauty of
the music with the events depicted.) The second film however seemed gratuitously violent and
stomach-churning and didnt even have a particularly exciting or credible plot. OK, I watched it,
possibly - like a lot of people - out of curiosity at all the hype and publicity: but I didn't
think much of it as a piece of film-making and I was sad that the name and music of Glenn Gould
was associated with it.
