That is most interesting as I am a big supporter of Richter's Schubert.
However I would have thought Gould with his habit of omitting exposition
repeats and generally quicker tempi would have been the antithesis of
Richter. However if, as you say Gould's opinion of Schubert's piano music
was formed only through Richter's performances,it is impossible to speculate
as to his own thoughts. Can't help thinking he would have brought his sense
of wit and pathos to some of Schubert's lighter movements (Minuets etc.)
Still, having witnessed Richter in the G Major Sonata, the 'hypnotic trance'
the first movement provoked throughout the audience was met with a
stunningly positive response.Was Gould's critisism of Richter's tempi
positive perhaps?
