Re: Glenn and Franz

An excellent question! Especially since I asked roughly the same
question a few months ago.

I think the general consensus is that GG did not like Schubert's music
for the same reasons he didn't like Chopin/Lizst etc., most of Mozart,
some Beethoven (but not all!!!) and lots of other "showy" piano
repetoire.

Basically, if the music did not present great contrapuntal revelations,
or have an internal logic, GG wasn't interested. So Chopin nocturnes,
Schubert sonatas, and other pianistic pieces didn't provide enough
musical insights for Glenn to make it worth his while to investigate
them further. However, relatively unknown pieces by Hindemith,
Schoenberg, Krenek, Sweelinck, Orlando Gibbons, William Byrd, and others
did provide this motivation, and so GG spent a lot of time investigating
them further.

There are more complicated musicological answers (of course), from Glenn
himself in his writings, interviews and programs, but I think that
summarizes it.

And to answer the original question, the only known recording of GG
playing Schubert that I know is Glenn playing excerpts of Symphony No. 5
on piano on the excellent "Glenn Gould: On the Record, Off the Record"
video/DVD (also included on the Sony GG Edition Video/LaserDisc).

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Matthew

Greetings everyone.
Listening to GG play the Brahms Ballades, I wondered if he had ever
considered playing any Shubert. I know of his aversion to Chopin,
Schumann, Liszt etc. but he did play a few of their works, but to the
best of my knowledge no Schubert. Can't help thinking his takes on the
large sonatas would have been interesting. Is there any documentation as
to his opinion of the Viennese Master. Just curious. Peter Lyon
