GG: Gould Lecture in Toronto, November 5

Dear List,

For those of you who might be interested, I'll be giving a lecture at
the Musical Intersections Conference in downtown Toronto on November 5th at
5 PM. The lecture is titled "Glenn Gould's Imaginary Orchestra" and examines
his use of internal structural imagery (the humming) and his external
imagery (the conducting as he played), and their relationship to music
cognition. Part of my hypothesis is that these two components help to
explain Gould's extraordinary performances of Bach, and reveal him to be a
virtuoso thinker; to engage Gould's performances from his perspective may
help focus attention toward his legacy, rather than toward his
"eccentricities." The lecture will be supplemented with video footage and
recordings.

A word about this conference - it's one of the largest of its kind,
joining 15 scholarly music societies into one mega-conference. It's 5 days
long and will be attended by a few thousand people. There will be dozens of
papers on a wide variety of topics and encourage you to check out the
program at the web address given below.

But here's the WARNING:

I do not know what the policy is with regard to walk-ins to see
lectures. Those attending the conference have to pay a registration fee
which is rather large. If you are interested in coming, please check out
this website for all of the times and scheduling and locations, and email
the organizers with questions regarding fees, if any, that might be
incurred.
