The sing-along portions had the song lyrics printed across the screen, and
a bouncing ball touched each syllable as the music got to that point.
This was supposed to help the viewer sing at the proper time, though not
necessarily helping with knowing the melody or being in tune.

For a modern version of this bouncing ball style, see the most recent Taco
Bell TV commercials which have sing-alongs. Taco Bell is a fast-food
company in the US featuring inexpensive Mexican-style food. Their popular
advertising campaign features a talking dog. The idea here is of course
if you can sing along with the commercial, you will remember it and sing
it at other times. See http://www.everwonder.com/david/tacobelldog.html
and watch the movie that is labeled "Gorditas singalong."
