I have attempted to play through all 9 of the
Liszt/Beethoven transcriptions and much of the music is unplayable in a normal
fashion. I mean, how can anyone's fingers 'really' do what Liszt has
written? What you end up stumbling through sort of sounds like the
symphonies. The 6'th and 5'th that Glenn did record are very faithful to
the ideas he felt Beethoven had in mind. It is a great tragedy that Gould
did not conduct B's symphonies as I do believe he would have brought the same
sort of fresh and scintillating insights that Mahler electrified Vienna and
Prague's audiences with. Such remain our fond dreams.
