That filmed analysis of the E major fugue is transcribed in Friedrich
p154-157 (thanks, Dominic, for the reference).  Gould says, "You know, it
isn't exactly the world's most original thought, but what a choral piece
this would have made! It's conceived vocally...."

Did GG know that Bach was directly reworking Fischer's fugue, another
keyboard piece?  It seems he might have said so if he had known it: it
would have made an even more fascinating analysis, comparing the two
pieces point by point since they share the same material.

Daniel, I agree with you that Gould's analysis of this piece has as much
to do with Schoenberg as Bach.  Motives being transformed!
