Who says being "strange" is a bad thing? Who says
being "goofy" is a bad thing? I know that I am often strange
and goofy, and I exalt in it. :->
Glenn Gould was extraordinary. Do you think people would
join this list if they didn't believe that? No one here has
said he wasn't extraordinary. Most extraordinary people are
different from the rest of the pack in some way. Sometimes
it's the only way they can cope with the world. No one is
saying that's a bad thing.
Yes, Glenn Gould had some unusual habits. I think most of
the people on this list realize that. I would rather accept
that than never address it. No one is "casting aspersions"
on his character here.
Glenn Gould was an extraordinary man, and compared to many
other extraordinary man, he seemed very charming and
amiable. But I don't want to end up in the trap of never
admitting that he had faults. I've read some of Glenn
Gould's letters and essays. I think he was very self-aware
himself and would never want his fans become so devoted
that they lionized him. (He liked dogs better than lions,
anyway... <g>)
I know some people would rather talk about the music and
nothing else. Sometime last year, someone on this list
accused people who talked about other facets of Glenn Gould
of being "trivial" and "banal." If this list avoided
talking about Glenn Gould's life, and avoided disagreement,
it would lose a lot of its soul -- and _then_ it would
be "banal."
