GG News of the winner of the first Glenn Gould Prize
Dear F Minors,
R. Murray Schafer, the winner of the first Glenn Gould Prize for Music and
its Communication in 1987, is going to have "The Palace of the Cinnabar
Phoenix" produced this September.
This is the eighth in the Patria series. Patria (homeland) is the title of a
cycle of music dramas that Mr. Schafer has been creating for 30 years.
This work started out during the performance of "The Greatest Show" in
Little Lake. After studying the water flow, the noise of the city and
traffic, Mr. Schafer scouted out a better location and found one on private
property north of Bowmanville Ont.
The production will feature the Puppet Mongers of Toronto, the La Jeunesse
choir, use of traditional Chinese instruments, stone chimes Tai Chi
performers, singers, dragons(?), swimmers, canoeists and Feast of Celestial
Offerings to eat.
It is based on T'Ang dynasty text.

R. Murray Schafer has an impressive list of compositions - orchestra,
chamber music, vocal, choral and movie. The article I am reading does not
mention piano compositions, but I know he wrote at least one, because I have
played it -- "Polytonality".
I think that it is wonderful that our Mr. Gould has a hand in encouraging
the musical genius of others.
