I was waiting for someone to mention the end of the cadenza for the first
movement of the 3rd; I saw it done to perfection just last week with Blanca
Uribe, a professor of piano at Vassar playing with the student orchestra.
It's one of those moments of luck, it seems to me, in that the conductor
must rely on his orchestra to play at just the right dynamic.

The whole of that cadenza has got to be one of the showiest and longest in
any concerto, which is why the end is so great.

Incidently, I love the cadenzas Gould wrote for the first; I studied the
first at one time, and none of the three cadenzas that Beethoven wrote is
really that satisfying.
