Re: M&A 272
Music and Arts CD 272 was the first in a series of pirates from this
company from California. They suddenly pulled their discs off the market
on October 28, 1991, around the time that Sony began releasing the Glenn
Gould Edition. It contains:
>From the Toronto broadcast of 22 November 1967:
Bach: Toccata in D minor
Bach: Art of the Fugue, Nos 11, 13, 9
Bach: English Suite No. 1 in A
>From the Toronto broadcast of 17 January 1956:
Bach: Partita No. 6 in E minor
Gibbons: Pavanne and Galliard.
Total time: 72:51
Yes, the three fugues are the same as those on Sony SK 52595. I am not
aware that the other repertoire is available on any label or has ever
been. My understanding is that Sony owns them, and as they have studio
recordings of this repertoire, the CBC broadcasts will likely be
suppressed. (However, last week I advised someone that the Silver Jubilee
would never see the light of day, and now I'm pleased to read that it
will) I haven't heard the original recital with its commentary, but I
imagine there is a reason why Gould played the three fugues in the order
11, 13, 9. As usual, Sony has run roughshod over the original concept and
released them in numerical order.
I found the Music and Arts releases to be of good quality, and I haven't
bought the Sony versions of the same releases.
The M and A missing from my collection is the last one, CD 694, which
includes the legendary Weber Konzertstuck. I would love to trade something
with anyone who has this one.
