Unless there's been a major change of direction, Kevin's book "Glenn
Gould : The Performer in the Work: A Study in Performance Practice"
promises to be a very thorough and scholarly analysis of GG's recording and
performance techniques. KB gave a preview of it at the GG convention in San
Fran this past May, and it was incredibly interesting. He discussed Gould's
"acoustic choreography" technique of recording (which y'all will remember
from the Sibelius recordings) and demonstrated exactly where and why it was
most effective. He backed up his analysis with Xerox copies of Gould's own
notated score, and I was enrapt.
I am really looking forward to this critical analysis, and I predict
that this book will not once mention the fact that GG's beloved chair
consisted of a bare crossbar that pained his rump. Go Kevin! Be a rebel!
:-)
