re: GG: Shostikovach Preludes and Fugues

James,

GG did *not* record nor perform(at least in public)
Shostakovich' 24 Preludes and Fugues.

The scores by Shostakovich remained in the GG Archives
in the National Library are:

Piano Quintet, op.57,
Symphony no. 11, and . . .
the 24 Preludes and fugues (2 vols.)!!!

According to the database, the scores of the 24 P & F are
published in Russia and
"inscribed to Glenn Gould by teachers and students of the
Moscow Conservatory, 1957 May 12".

So, GG might have been given the scores by Russians.

BTW, the 24 was dedicated to the late Russian pianist
Tatiana Nikolaeva, who attended the very first recital
of GG in May 1957, and went off-stage to meet him.
(There remains her concert review, which was written
in Russian, but there is an English translation, I suppose.)

Tatiana Nikolaeva was very proud of having been dedicated
the 24 P&F by Shostakovich, so played the music many times
and recorded three times.
She died suddenly in November 1992, in San Fransicco,
on her tour. A stroke happened just after a recital,
where she had performed the 24 P & F.

Regards,

Junichi
