GG: Music sorta theorist!

I wish I had a nickel for every time GG mentions the tone rows of
Webern!  I understand what GG means in relation to _North_, but what,
for example, might be an "instrumental idea" of Webern's?  How are
Webern's tone rows different from Schoenberg's?

I understand the appeal of Webern to be his contrast of instruments as 
another element of the tonal system.  This is evidenced in Webern's 
concerto for Nine Instruments in which the individual instruments only 
play a few notes at a time and the theme is varied in the next 
instrument.  Webern is the only one I know who could match a piano 
with a trumpet.  On the other hand, Schoenberg varies the theme with 
the same instrument.  That's my view of it, and I am partial to 
neither composer (Forgive me Glenn!)
