 How many people got exposed to Glenn Gould and find his playing transcendent? I am one of those. I never paid attention to other pianists before, but this particular one caught my ear. This from somebody who never paid attention to classical music. And from that early listening experience, yes, I have been exposed to many other historical and present day pianists. All who have something to offer. But none have had the effect that GG has had on my listening experience. Was he the best at what he did? What was it that he did? Just play the piano? Nah, he created a universe based on his own precepts of how things should be done and did them that way. Along the way he captured the attention of people like me. Let's see how many other pianists get to have their own F_minor's a quarter of a century after passing from the scene. 
It has been a long time since we have had a good old raging debate at the F_minor corral. Bring it on.

It's hugely healthy and provocative to see dissenting opinions such as this one 
appearing on the f-minor list.  If this list is about sycophantism, please 
cancel my membership.  That said, while I might be inclined to agree with you 
about most of Gould's Beethoven and Mozart, have you heard his recordings of the 
Brahms Intermezzi?  Fair enough if you think they are dreary, but then our ears, 
hearts, and minds must work quite differently.  And anyone who would blunty 
dismiss all of Second-Vienna modernism simply has not heard many of Gould's 
recordings of this music, or is not listening.
