[F_minor] The GG Trilogy / Richter The Enigma

"The Glenn Gould Trilogy - A Life" does indeed exist in English, it's a three cd set with a terrific booklet including some b/w photos of GG I have never seen before (and I've seen a lot). This set is a class act: do get one. A co-production of Westdeutscher Rundfunk (Kulturradio WDR 3) and Sony Classical/Sony BMG Music anno 2007. CD1: The Idea of Music; CD2 The Drop-Out; CD3 The Quiet in The Studio. You'll inevitably be familiar with a lot of the biographical information but this is much more and there is so much music here. While in Ontario to visit 'The Sounds of Genius' I took the Greyhound to Toronto for a look around Gould's Town, I found The Trilogy at: SONIC BOOM, 512 BLOOR ST W, TORONTO - 416.532.0334 (open 10:00 to 24:00), I paid Can$ 20,99; I also found GG The Young Maverick there. The salespeople were very friendly and helpful so perhaps you could order directly from them. I seem to remember the young man telling me that they don't usually ship but that it could be arranged...One of my favorites of the liner notes Dr. Stegemann did for Sony Classical is the 'conversation' between GG and WA Mozart that takes place on a cloud, written for The Complete Piano Sonatas.
Concerning Richter The Enigma, it has been aired on tv here, TV5 Monde. I have seen it for sale at Music Hug, a well known Swiss chain of specialized music stores, so try www.ideale-audience.com. I can't stress this strongly enough: DON'T OVERLOOK YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARY. If you knew how many times I have seen the 1992 Glenn Gould Collection (vhs) listed in US library catalogues on the Web...and mind you it is virtually impossible to buy now. I have also seen The Alchemist listed. Sure a lot is on youtube but most isn't and some of what is on youtube is being 'flagged' and taken down, GG's La Valse is a case in point. The range of classical music dvds at the University of Lausanne library is staggering (Richter is there) and don't forget inter-library loans are easy too. Nearly all of Gould's recordings are at U of Lausanne library as well.
The voice-over of Gould for Richter The Enigma is much less irksome than that which was perpetrated by Rory Bremner for 'Hereafter' and which is at times frankly unintelligible. The French version was spoken by Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and The Butterfly; Munich), and is what the English version should have been. Perhaps two or three people agree with me on this.
Be seeing you at the library,
Mary Jensen
