Just a short commment:
It often seems to me that Glenn Gould and his legacy are perhaps not as widely appreciated in
this country (the UK) as in other parts of the world, but I have no idea why this should be.
Would anyone else care to comment on this?
If I remember correctly [anyone with more definite info?], Gould's
Goldberg 1981 was voted by the readers of Gramophone the best solo
instrumental album of the 20th century. It was preceded only by a few
orchestral and vocal albums. Now, the readership of Gramophone might not
be dominated by people living in UK, but at last it gives some
indications that there are Gould fans even in Britain. I do agree that
Gould's records often get (even more true some 10 or 15 years ago) less
positive reviews in Gramophone for example. Don't know why really, even
though British magazines tend to give British labels better reviews. II
think it has at least something to do with two different sounds ideals:
the more often crisp, closely miked North American recordings as oppsed
to the more "laid-back" Hyperion and Chandos sound.
On what would have been GG's 70th birthday our
Classic FM radio station broadcast a short concert of his recordings, and the guy who introduced
it admitted that although he had not previously taken much note of Gould's work, but was
certainly moved to listen to more of it in future. He also read out an email I sent during the
broadcast, in which I mentioned that GG had a large following round the world and if people were
interested, I told them about the GG Foundation ...and F_Minor!
Excellent initiative!
