[F_MINOR] OT: Question about Recording Contracts
Help! Bow to the experts and all that!
I'm writing a story (OK, stories) about a classical musician (violinist)
who retired young. This took place in about 1980. He told his record
company that he could no longer perform because of stage fright -- in fact,
he couldn't even make studio recordings. The record company publicly said
that he was retiring because of an injury to his hands. (The truth about
why he gave up performing is much more complex, and therein lies the
tale...)
Would the record company release him from his contract without a fight
under this circumstance? Would they have tried to sue him? Cajole him? Bake
cookies for him? Or tied to get him to go to some kind of counseling to
treat the stage fright? Would they have released the story about the injury
rather than stage fright? (OK, that might have been his doing.) Also, how
much would the musician have to pay to get out of his contract under these
conditions?
I pour my gratitude on you in advance. :-)
