I couldn't agree more. I wasn't able to get the CBC broadcast (I'm in NY and
though I listened via the website, it was not on; perhaps it was already
completed). However, I just purchased this recording about 2 weeks ago, and
after years of hearing all the hype about it, I have to say I found myself
bewildered about why it should have been considered so controversial. I
found it marvelous, not all that unconventional and certainly not extreme.
The slow tempo (which is by no means exceedingly slow -- I've heard it
performed nearly as slowly by others) brings out the rich texture of the
music. I can't understand all the bruhaha that surrounded this performance.
Even Bernstein, though he issued his "disclaimer" also went on to say that
he believed Glenn's interpretation really elicited some beautiful nuances in
the Brahms, and that he respected him for it. (those were not his exact
words.)
I feel there was an unfair tendancy by the media, particularly the NY
critics, to pounce on Glenn as being an oddball, and this to me is certainly
one example of that.
