Re: GG and Schubert

Well, what can I say! I was prepared to be surprised... And I was! (And I even own this video, I need to spend more time watching videos!).

However, I think Vince Vo and Fred hit the nail on the head, Schubert's music didn't seem to hold that internal structural challenge that GG so loved. In fact, I was listening to the Idea of North (I just _love_ the part in the beginning where GG introduces himself... "This is Glenn Gould, and this is the Idea.......... (1 second pause) "of North".), and I'm amazed how fluid and weaving the voices are in it. It is a contrapuntal work to rival that of Beethoven, or, dare I mention it(gasp), Mr. Bach.

But always remember: never be clever for the sake of being clever...
