I've been roundly chastized for this view, but I
absolutely adore those cadenzas. I photocopied them about 20 years
ago so that I could learn them. Gould's recording of the Beethoven's P.C.
1 is, for my taste, the best I've ever heard. I love the speed and
precision. And the way he plays those cadenzas
is just stunning. They're contrapuntal, obviously,
but they still work beautifully.
Another wild contention: Gould also does a
beautiful 2nd and 4th, although there are other versions of the 4th I prefer:
Gilels/Sanderling, for example. But, then, Gould and Gilels have nothing
in common except the first letter of their last name. One really
can't compare, the approaches to the piano are so utterly
different.
