Schnabel Chromatic Fantasia

I recently bought a CD containing all Artur Schnabel´s recording of Bach´s
music. Among them a version of the Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue (recorded
1936). When I first listened to Gould´s recording, I thought nobody before
had played the fantasia like him. But Schnabel did !!! He also plays the
chords up- and downwards, and uses almost the same tempi. Did someone else
listen to both recordings ? What are your impressions about them ? Of course
Gould did admire Schnabel, but it does not explain why he plays this works
almost exactly like him...
