When it comes to "What could he busy with when not playing?"

There are several things that come to mind. There was editing
of recordings, writing for many different publications, including
liner notes for his albums, studying of scores, investments, etc.

It's amazing how it is possible to insert something recorded separately into

entanglement of voices in a fugue with no sign of "trickery" but it must
possible...
