GG and all that jazz
Good afternoon everybody
Whilst browsing through my Oxford Dictionary of Music recently, I noticed
(under the GG entry) that it states he had "an exceptionally wide repertory
from 16th century keyboard works to Jazz".
Now whilst I have a touching trust that works of reference like the ODM will
not lie to me, I confess I personally find it hard to imagine GG playing
jazz!
In any case the above statement would seem to be refuted by Gould himself in
his letter of 6th July 1974 to the Rev. Gerald Pocock (who had mentioned
that he would love to see a documentary featuring GG and Oscar Peterson)
when he wrote that his limits of his appreciation for jazz "have not
appreciably increased in recent years and I now feel the essential
ingredient for music on camera is a mutual enthusiasm shared by all parties
and that, consequently, this mix would not produce the most efficacious
result".
So: did GG ever play jazz? and if yes, does there exist any record of such
an experiment (even if not intended for public consumption)?
Best wishes to all
