GG: The Visionary
Dear Sirs/Madams:
I am new to this list, so please forgive me if this discussion is already
in progress or has been exhausted.
Inasmuch as the commentary on Mr. Gould's musical accomplishments is
necessary and rewarding, since primarily, he was a musician, I would like
to offer another topic for discussion of all who are interested.
I am interested in GG as a philosopher, communicator, writer and visionary.
His work for CBC and his sound documentaries are nothing short of pure
genius, regardless of what one has to say about the music, performance
nuances, interpretation of composers works', etc.
To begin this discussion, I offer a question. Has anyone heard the
recent re-release of the Glenn Gould Silver Jubilee Collection on Sony?
Disc 1 is a might drab (some of the performances are less spirited than
others, and I am not a fan of opera or operatic performance). Disc 2,
however, contains two radio programs. The exact title of the most first
one eludes me, however, the second one is a Gould fantasy called
"Critic's Call-Out Corner".
In keeping it short, I will say that I adore these productions. Gould's
fantasies are sharp-witted and yet self-parodying at the same time. His
stabs at the public arts "scene" are extremely funny, and his characters
are simply hilarious.
I would love to hear the opinions of the readers on these comedic radio
works. I'm sure we can get into discussions of his more well-known sound
documentaries later (notably, of course, "The Idea of North"), but for
now, we can keep it simple.
I look forward to hearing from other list members on this topic.
Best regards,
Scott Jaworski
