Re: GG:Silver Jubilee Album
Dear Pat and List,
The musical contents of the Silver Jubilee Album have been released in
the Sony Glenn Gould Edition on CD. The other disc, the Glenn Gould
Fantasy, has not been released, but when I ventured the opinion a while
ago that it would not see the light of day, somebody (Junichi??) said a
release was in the works in Japan. I'm a little fogggy on the details
of that release. The main value of the Fantasy seems to me to be the
short excerpt from the exceedingly rare 50s CBC broadcast of the Weber
Konzertstuck with Gould and Sir Ernest MacMillan. This is about the
only Gould recording I don't have, so if anybody has it (maybe on Music
and Arts CD), please let me know. The rest of the Fantasy is sheer
idiocy, with Margaret Pacsu as accomplice.
All that being said, if I was in the blessed state of having made a
fresh acquaintance with Gould's work, I would seek out many other
recordings before I got around to worrying about the Silver Jubilee
Edition.
In no particular order, I recommend his recordings of Bach, Schoenberg,
Brahms, Wagner, and Gibbons.
