Re: GG: Ulrich Urban?... more
I asked if anyone had opinions about the pianist Ulrich Urban; a couple folks replied
privately that they have never heard of him. Well, I know little more, except that the
on CD I have by him, referenced in my earlier message, is wonderful. But the only
bio material is in German, which radically limits my comprehension. Looks like
he's from Frankfurt, and studied in Leipsig. UU may not be GG, but
he's worth an ear.
An altavista search turns up little, except that he might have one or
two more recordings, and he is ajudicating at a couple upcoming
competitions including Eleventh International Johann Sebastian
Bach Competition, Leipzig, to be held next month.
So if anyone knows any more, please fill me in.

If Krajny's 1984 Prague Radio performance of Schulhoff's Partita for Piano
is anything to go on (Praga PR 255 006), the Panton disc should be a
winner.
Dr. Hurwitz:
It is vastly helpful to give record numbers when new issues are cited. Are
the "10 syncopated Etudes" the set titled "Hot Music?"
Other Schulhoff piano solo works on recommendable current CDs:
1. "Jazz-inspired Piano works" (Tomas Visek) Supraphon 11 1870-2
(5) Pittoresken // Partita // 5 Etudes de Jazz // Hot Music // Suite
dansante en jazz
2. "Sonatas and Suites for piano" (Tomas Visek) Su. 11-2172-2
Sonatas for Piano, Nos. 1-3 // Suites for Piano, Nos. 2-3
3. Variations on an Original Dorian Theme, op. 10; 9 Little Round Dances,
op. 13.; Piano Sonata No. 3 (Ulrich Urban)
Koch-Schwann 3-1186-2.
A few of Ervin Schulhoff's own recordings, from mid-20s Polydor 78s, have
surfaced on London 444 819-2, coupled with somewhat costive performances of
three concertos containing jazz elements. Privileged information indicates
that more of Schulhoff's recordings will emerge in the near future. Watch
this space, as they say.
