However none of this gives a much clearer insight into
why Bach wrote the piece.
Well, it seems to me to be perfectly in the vein of the other late Bach
compositions ... whether he originally composed it for
Keyserlingk/Goldberg is another matter, but he could well have been
working on it anyway and dedicated a copy to the count for whatever
reason ...
Too bad we don't have a time machine :-).
