GG: centipedal

The Centipedal Paradox is an old idea. Arthur Koestler used it in his book,
"The Act of Creation", as way of explaining how the nervous system
hierarchizes(sp) information. An excerpt of the centipedal paradox appears
on the first page of chapter 6 in Payzant's "GG: Music and Mind" (revised
edition):

The Centipede was happy, quite
Until the Toad in fun
Said, "Pray which leg goes after which?"
And worked her mind to such a pitch,
She lay distracted in the ditch
Considering how to run.

Payzant cited the The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, (2nd ed. 1953.) 
Question is, where did Schoenberg get it? Where did it originate?
