[F_minor] strange voice on a Gould youtube clip

Here's a new youtube clip of Glenn Gould talking about Sviatoslav Richter:

As two commenters have already noted, Gould's (?) voice sounds very strange
in this clip. Does anyone know why this might be? Any information, or even
constructive speculation, would be appreciated.
