RE: [F_minor] Biography
Payzant's work was never meant to be a bio in the traditional sense - the more so since it had GG's blessing and was intended to explain GG's thought on music, interpretation, recording, etc. With GG looking more or less over Payzant's shoulder, rest assured nothing of too personal a nature would have ended up in there to begin with. GG in fact actively supported Payzant with fact checking, additional supporting details, etc., and, last but not least, wrote a review, which in part was characteristically tongue in cheek.
Bazzana's bio is probably the THE one to read - considered now the standard; yes, there is Otto Friedrich's (okayed by the Glenn Gould Estate) and then Peter Ostwald's (psycho-biography - that one didn't do as much for me). There's yet a new one underway for publication in 2010.
Cheers,

Subject: Re: [F_minor] Biography
Can anybody reccomend the best biography of Gould? I have read the
GG reader and "Conversations with GG".
By and large, I enjoyed the earlier biographies more than the later
ones, but that could have just been because I read them first :).
On the other hand, Payzant (the very first one) didn't do a lot for me.
Specifically:
- the first posthumous biography, Glenn Gould: A life and
variations by Otto Friedrich.
- the collection published very shortly after his death, Glenn Gould
Variations edited by John McGreevy, with contributions from many
people. (Not exactly a biography.)
- Etha has mentioned the Selected Letters. Not exactly a biography
either of course, but hey, that's the real (written) GG, as close as
we'll ever get.
