RE: [F_minor] Glenn Gould movies
Dear José and All of F_Minor --
I apologize for joining this thread so late as I was out of town - welcome, José!
José, right on! You have put your finger on a long-standing pet peeve of mine; the only way I was able to get my hands on the Glenn Gould Collection (a ratty old set of VHS cassettes) was through my local library's ILS - and, believe me, that took some doing and the quality left quite a bit to be desired - a shame in view of the musical gems contained in those 15 or 16 cassettes. Lots of items in there that GG never recorded commercially. Plus plenty of GG commenting on and explaining the music he played, which I found of equal interest.
Like José, I have been belly-aching for quite some time as to why this set was never re-issued on DVD (yeah, it was, on laser disk - but that technology came and went and died a quiet death long since). These items are even hard to obtain on eBay. And so I, too, would be ready to apply pressure on whatever entity (Glenn Gould Foundation, Sony) to see about a proper re-issue. I'm new to such activism, but am ready to invest the time and effort if one of you could advise what best to do.
As to your reference to Angela Hewitt - to my knowledge, it was Alberto Guerrero's wife, Myrtle Rose, who was Angela's teacher, not his daughter. And there seems to have been some "bad" blood as a result of GG failing (or being perceived to fail) to assign proper credit for his success to his teacher. Alberto Guerrero, by all accounts, was sanguine about it (GG wouldn't be the first student who disavowed his teacher); but those arround Alberto considered it a real human weakness on GG's part and thus unforgivable. This "might" explain a little bit why no mention was made on the DVD. Outside of that, I could imagine that it must be quite frustrating to be constantly compared to GG who's Bach playing is still THE yardstick to beat - although this type of comparison really makes no sense as one's preference for any given musical interpretation is a very personal choice (case in point, I like Richter's Rachmaninov , but dislike Ashkenazy's - go figure).
All the very best to all of you and, please, if anyone of you could advise José and me how to get a petition or some such off the ground, please do.
Cheers,
C.

Subject: [F_minor] Glenn Gould movies
Dear F_minors
Thank you very much to all of you, Fred, Pat, Etha, Mary and Karl, for
gentle welcome and interesting and useful suggestions that
have been very appreciated; I still believe that should be put some
pressure on Sony (after all they are cashing well with Glenn) to
reissue a full collection of Glenn movies with subtitles in English
and French ( or more languages to enlarge the market with
correspondent more profit); it's not easy to a Portuguese in Portugal
(far away from decision centers) to start any kind of movement on that
scope but I would be the first to sign if such initiative take place;
perhaps The Glenn Gould Foundation could do something about; I believe
the majority of you are in better position to analyse if something can
be done.
I take the opportunity to submit to you a fact somehow strange: I
bought recently two DVD's (single cover) from Angela Hewitt on Bach
Performance on the Piano; the first DVD is a two hours lecture on
performing Bach and surprise....not a single mention on Glenn from a
Canadian pianist that has been taught by the daughter of Alberto
Guerrero;has somebody an explanation?
Kind Regards and thanks again
José António Soares
