Re: [F_minor] Brahms D minor / Baltimore
Hello Neil and f-minor,
Why were the Music and Arts releases that came out sometime in the
nineties suppressed ? There was a Strauss Burlesque and a Brahms D
minor. Its seems grossly unfair for to whoever has these recordings
under lock and key not to release them.
Does anyone have a copy ?
Yes. I have 6 Music & Arts CDs, obtained when I lived many years ago
in Hong Kong. I think I got most of them locally but it's so long ago
I cannot be sure. The Web wasn't up to much in those days but I may
have used mail order.
Anyway, the CDs I have are (in no particular order, and all of the
following is from the liner notes and not my own comments, except
where it's obvious or enclosed by '***'):
1. CD-617 Historic Mono [1989] -- A previously unissued broadcast
from 1967:
(a) W A Mozart -- Fantasy No. 2 in c-minor, K396 -- 8'01"
(b) L van Beethoven -- Sonata in B-flat, Op 106, 'Hammerklavier' --
49'00"
i Allegro 11'09"
ii Scherzo/Presto. Assai vivace 2'51"
iii Adagio sostenuto 20'56"
iv Largo/Allegro 13'52"
Technical note: This CD was mastered from a copy of what is believed
to be the only extant tape-recording of this broadcast recital. Made
by an amateur on home equipment, the original off-the-air tape-
recording has slight flutter, wow, peak distortion, and an occasional
very slight dropout. Every effort was made to improve the source tape
with state-of-the-art technology, but some flaws could not be
eliminated. This CD is therefore recommended only for its documentary
and artistic value, and is not for sound enthusiasts.
2. CD-285 Historic Mono [1988, and made in Japan] -- First-ever
release of the 1957 broadcast:
(a) Johannes Brahms -- Quintet in f for Piano and Strings, Op 34 --
34'27" (GG with the Montreal String Quartet)
I Allegro non troppo 11'12"
II Andante, un poco adagio 6'36"
III Scherzo (Allegro)/Trio 8'32"
IV Finale: Poco sostenuto 10'49"
(b) Johannes Brahms -- Intermezzo, Op 119, No. 1 (GG alone, of
course), 2'39"
3. CD•663 Glenn Gould -- A Previously Unreleased Broadcast (1968)
(a) L van Beethoven -- Sonata No. 24 in F-sharp, Op 78
I Adagio cantabile 4'30"
II Allegro vivace 2'29"
(b) C P E Bach -- Sonata in a, Wq 49 No. 1 (Würrtemberg No. 1)
I Moderato 4'04"
II Andante 3'26"
III Allegro assai 3'08"
(c) Allesandro Scarlatti -- Two keyboard sonatas
Sonata in D, L-463 1'44"
Sonata in G, L486 2'17"
(d) Alexander Scriabin -- Sonata No. 3 in f-sharp, Op 23
I Drammatico 7'59"
II Allegretto 2'42"
III Andante 5'17"
IV Presto con fuoco 7'08"
4. CD-272 (from Austria) -- Two legendary broadcast recitals -- first

birthday, just as an aside***]
Toccata in d [4 movements]

(b) Bach and Gibbons -- from the broadcast of 17th January 1956
Bach -- Partita No. 6 in e, 6 movements
Orlando Gibbons -- Pavanne and Galliarde, 2 movements
5. CD-297 (from Japan) -- Glenn Gould In Concert [***made on a Uher
portable recorder, so fidelity is not hifi***]
(a) Johannes Brahms -- Concerto No. 1 in d for Piano & Orchestra, Op
15, 43'46"

(b) Richard Strauss -- Burleske in d for Piano & Orchestra (1885) 21'28"
(With Baltimore S. O., cond. Peter H. Adler, from a concert given 3
January 1962)
6. CD-284 (Historic Mono) -- The Art of the Young Glenn Gould [The
liner notes say broadcasts were recorded on acetate disks]
(a) Ludwig van Beethoven -- Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat, Op 19
I Allegro con brio 13'01"
II Adagio 8'20"
iii Rondo, molto allegro 5'28"

(c) Ludwig van Beethoven -- 32 Variations in c, WoO 80 (1806),

The liner notes to CD•663 briefly describe other GG Music & Arts CDs:
CD-298 -- JSB's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 with Baltimore SO/Adler
(1962); and a TV Recital with Yehudi Menuhin -- JSB's Sonata No. 4 in c.
CD-639 -- LvB's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat (Emperor) with an
unnamed SO, cond. Karel Ancerl, from 1970; LvB's Trio in D, Op 70 No.

CD-651 -- Liszt's transcription of LvB's Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral)
for piano (1968); Mendelssohn's 5 Songs Without Words (1970).
I hope this is of interest to the list.
