Re: [F_minor] Sort of OT: Collecting Classical Records
I remember too, that when we first played it, we thought the record itself
was defective as it sounded bizarre at 33 rpm. We then checked the cover and
discovered how to play the record.
On the other hand, I always thought the "Boston" LP sounded better
played at 45, even though it was designed for 33.
I made myself tapes of some of Gould's records played at 45, too.
Different structural things come out of the playing that way, and the
pitch is transposed up a fourth. I think the weirdest thing I did with
a Gould record, for a fun tape, was to run two turntables at once. In
the left channel I had GG's performance of the Beethoven B-flat piano
concerto. In the right channel I had Toscanini's of the Mendelssohn
A-major symphony. The two pieces have the same timing within a couple
of seconds, and both of these were mono, so hey, listen to both at once.
What a trip. I blame Gould, for listening to two or more radios at
once, and for having several people talk at once in his documentaries.
