Hi List, Yeah, using the Nancy Canning catalog, to
me it looks like the Music and Arts disc should be the same as the one later
issued by Sony. Timings for the two different recordings of
the first movement below. Eric remembers correctly; There is quite a difference
in tempo. First movement only, found on the Beethoven
5th disc: 9’59. First movement on the complete 6th
disc: 12’21. Anyone heard the Scherbakov version of the
6th for solo piano on Not much magic there for me. And he completes
the symphony in only 39 minutes, whereas Gould takes a leisurely 55. This Gould/Liszt/Beethoven complete 6th
is one of my all-time favorite recordings of anything. Jim -----Original

released a complete B6 / Liszt with GG on a separate disc. It may in fact be
the M and A release. I don't know. I do remember that there is quite a
difference in tempo between the two recordings of the 1st movement. I too
really love these recordings. One of the projects I know was discussed for GG
was a recording of the complete Beethoven / Liszt symphonies. I know Beethoven
really liked Beethoven 2 and 8. It would have been interesting to see what he
did with such works as the Eroica, B7 and B9 which he liked less. IIRC he also
didn't care much for B5 either but turned out a rather nice performance of the
symphony anyway. ************************************************** Signoff instructions, and user preference interface F_minor Website ************************************************** ************************************************** Signoff instructions, and user preference interface F_minor Website ************************************************** |
