When I was a young piano student at RCM (aka 'The Con'), I met Gould through
my father, a studio musician doing one of many gigs at the CBC. From
my general impression of him then, and in my present, ahem, mature retrospect
and humble academic experience, I sense that he would have made an exceptional
teacher, if given the opportunity and his automonous choice. I don't
believe Gould was an introvert, Juozas - I speculate that he was more of
a - need-of-solitude yet socially benevolent and outgoing, quirky and eccentric
yet as normal (relatively speaking) and altruistic as they come - type
of fellow. Piano academia in general is a very solitary vocation,
requiring a single-minded focus and marriage-like dedication - the teaching
of which is done primarily one-on-one - in conjecture, I believe that Gould
may have thrived in this professional atmosphere.
