Thanks to Sarah, Dominic and Bradley,
So it seems that the only way to get the 57
recording of this incredible Fugue on CD is to buy the Sony Jacket
Collection.
Dominic wrote:
"Given that Gould chose to record and
isolate the E-major fugue as far back as 1957, in only his third
recording for CBS, is
testament to the passion Gould felt for this piece. In fact, in 1979 GG used the
E-major fugue as the centerpiece to
his Monsaingeon video collaboration “An Art of Fugue” to illustrate
the pinnacle of
Bach’s fugue writing, including an extremely detailed harmonic analysis (for a
film), and delivers a stunning,
spiritual performance that is almost three times slower than his WTC II
recording of
1969!"
Yes indeed - and the 1957 and 1979
versions are nearly of the same tempi, having also great similarities in
_expression_ and spirit. Personally I do prefer the later version for it´s more
clearer and mystic dimension. In my ears both recordings, the composition
itself, is a insight in wisdom and rest in eternal peace (unfortunately
reality is back after 5 minutes of listening). At least
it is also very touching and
important to me, to see that GG performs this essential work in nearly the same
way at the beginning and the end of his life as an artist...

Jörg
