Re: New Glenn Gould Release

Oh Daniel, just spend the 18 bucks. This week I have a great deal of evidence to believe we're all going to perish from global warming, so we might as well go out with lovely background music. (Non-USA'ers: I apologize for Bush's universal rejection of the Kyoto Protocol. Also Bush's reneging on Clinton's promise to sign the International Land Mine Ban. Also Bush's unilateral rejection of ... )

I think I've mentioned this before. Sometime in the '80s I was at the Harvard Coop and they had a huge bin of cheap cassette tapes. One of them said "Very Earliest Recordings of Glenn Gould!" The label wasn't Columbia, nor was it any label I'd ever heard of. For that price I didn't have much to lose, so I bought it.

They weren't lying. These were the Very Earliest Recordings of Glenn Gould. Some aunt had turned on a primitive reel-to-reel tape-recorder while the tot was tortuously and laboriously banging out scales, Chopsticks, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (his very first Mozart, too!) ... the aunt had captured him during his first three months on the piano stool (assisted by the Toronto phone book). I've never had any reason to question its authenticity. Or listen to it again.
