Misconceptions about Glenn Gould
What are the misconceptions about Glenn Gould that annoy you
the most?
Are you annoyed by people who think of him primarily as a
Bach interpreter but ignore important (and wonderful) work
such as the Brahms?
Are you annoyed by people who think that the humming and the
other behaviors were part of an "act"? (Oh, puh-lease. If
that were the case, I think he would've at least taken off
his gloves when it hit 90 degrees!)
Are you annoyed by people who concentrate on GG as a
collection of eccentricities instead of seeing him as a
real person? (Those who compared him to David Helfgott
seemed to miss the point!) Or by those who have turned GG
into a saint, forgetting that he was a real person with
both flaws and strengths, not to mention that sense of
humor?
Or perhaps is the most annoying thing of all the person who
says "Glenn who?..." (Why do they let those people work in
record stores?! Oh the horror!)
