Daedalus Books online has the following CD and book on sale at
http://www.daedalus.com
Glenn Gould Edition: String Quartet Opus 1 (Sony), US$12.75
"Unfinished Journey" a revised, updated & expanded memoir by Yehudi
Menuhin, US$7.98
Excerpt from the hardcover book description: "Menuhin tells of his
friendships and collaborations with Serkin, as well as Benjamin Britten,
Sibelius, Bartók, Glenn Gould, Casals, Heifetz, Sir Edward Elgar,
Shostakovich, and Piatigorsky."
Daedalus is a long-time favourite source of mine for remaindered CDs and
books, but they (or some smart aleck copywriter) really should be rapped
on the knuckles for their description of the Gould CD, which treads
heavily upon (if not crosses) conventional boundaries of good taste:
"This is an important disc for Gould aficionados. When he was mapping
out his musical career, he thought he would end his concert performances
and devote himself to the recording studio at 30, and turn to a life of
composition after 50. He did turn away from the concert hall at 30, but
died 10 days [sic] after his 50th birthday (devoting himself thereafter,
one would assume, to decomposition)...."
It takes all kinds.
