1. I like Schiff's Frenchies very much.
Specifically the Suite 1 Gigue, Suite 2 Air, Suite 3 Gigue, Suite 4
Allemande, Bourree and Gavotte, and the Suite 5 Bourree and Courante, if I
remember correctly. It's been a while since I played the French, but I
always liked imitating Schiff (after having had a Gouldish workout first of
course!)
2. Hard call. I know at least which I don't like - Landowska (her first, old
recording is the worst) and Hewitt. I like Schepkin very much, but actually,
if you want a good Gould contrast, try Schiff again. His Goldbergs can
rightly be criticized for being irritatingly stop-and-go, but makes an
intersting alternative to Glenn. Need to get a Hill Goldberg.
