GG Glenn Gould and the sustaining pedal
On the Goldberg video (1981), he uses the pedal a lot, but only for half a
second at a time or less. Maybe what he meant was that he doesn't use the
pedal (for Bach) as a consciously employed tool to gain a specified result.
In fact, I cannot hear, on this video, where he's using the pedal and where
he isn't. I'm convinced that his use of the pedal here is completely
subconscious, at least I cannot see any kind of pattern, and I'm sure that
the pedaling in take 3 was all different from take 2. In some of the
variations he uses no pedal at all, as you can see by his posture (right
foot far away from pedal).
