Please allow us to introduce
ourself:
The Smetana´s Litomyšl
International Opera festival (founded in 1949) is the second oldest
music festival. It is also the largest open-air festival of classical music held
in this country. Smetana´s Litomyšl takes place each year over two
consecutive long weekends at the end of June and the beginning of July. The
center of festival activities is Litomyšl castle, a national cultural
landmark. While it is music by smetana and orther Czech composers that forms the
backbone of the festival´s program, there is room here for good music of
all kinds, regardless of genre. As a rule, the emphasis is placed on works in
which the vocal part dominates (opera, oratorios, cantats, vocal recitlas and
choral concerts), but this does not mean that orchestral or chamber music is
neglected. the most renowned Czech opera companies, orchestras and soloists
regularly take part in the festival, and important foreign performers heve been
appearing here more and more often. The Smetana´s Litomyšl
International Opera Festival is a member of the prestigious Czech
Association of Music Festivals, and Litomyšl is likewise the
headquarters of this institution.
