This may have been settled already, but I bet what you have in mind is the
D 940 Fantasia. It's in four continuous movements, very much in the form
of a sonata with thematically linked movements. I have a recording by
Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu, a great performance. As the notes to the CD
mention, it has been called "the crowning glory" of Schubert's piano duets.
I love the piece and recommend it highly.
