Here's a painting by Lawren Harris (one of the Group of Seven)
from 1923 entitled, "First Snow, North Shore of Lake Superior".
I can't say if this is what GG had in mind specifically, but this
might show you the "flavor" of Northern Ontario.  Some of these
landscapes are very stark and beautiful.
