I just read the revised bach reader and the stuff there (from Forkel,
cpe bach, et al) said that he almost entirely composed from the keyboard
(after his novice days), and then would try the piece at the instrument.

Like Gould in a way, who of course told everyone who asked they should
stay far far away from the piano when studying a piece :).


P.S. In the favorite key sweepstakes, I must admit mine is d minor,
purely because bach composed the art of fugue and so many other amazing
pieces in it :).
